I just got married. In Newfoundland, with 34 people in total on hand for 4 days, family and best friends, in an Inn in a remote outport. There was a ton of love, fun, and a lot of drinking. I can’t get into it because I could never do it justice in a blog post. It was the most amazing experience, and not just because PJ and I wed and could not be happier – I think I speak for everyone who was there: it was magical. I am happy. Very. I am jet-lagged and exhausted with bliss, and trying my damndest to get back into the swing of it all and all things I love about the Internet, which I did miss incidentally, but not enough to stop drinking fine wines and packing on the post wedding 10 L-B’s with the best food on the planet. Merci Beaune. Merci Paris. Here are some of brother-in-law Weston’s pics… I have not ventured to get mine going just yet, but I will eventually…

Back to reality:
Tomorrow I am heading into the CBC here in Vancouver to talk about the thing I love most about my job: social networks taking over the Internet. I am thrilled that the CBC’s Craig Lederhouse has put this together (using google sites, nice.) and opening up the channels to flow more knowledge at the fine folks who bring me my happy place each day, all day, my obsession and favourite Canadian Institution, the CBC. Kris Krug writes on this CBC milestone a lot more eloquently than I currently am managing to muster, and he will of course be a major player in the day. In addition to Krug, they are also fortunate to have a few other savvy social networkers in the room: John Dickerson, Roz Allen, Alfred Hermida, Susan Ormiston, and John Paolozzi. There are a lot of these “types” here in Vancouver, so let this be the first of many at the CBC and get more of Techcouver involved down the road.

Follow along, contribute through the day if you feel so inclined, and I’ll do the same along the way, most certainly, you’ll catch anything here.

Yes, 42 board members. Is this in the Guinness Records yet? Actually, it’s currently at 41 – the 42nd is very soon crossing the floor. (I nominate another fantastic Vancouverite to squeak in – let’s get some more Canadian blood in there!)

Chris Heuer, Kristie Wells and Howard Greenstein have been long-time advocates of social media and building and supporting community, which led to their organization they Co-Founded several years back, the Social Media Club (SMC). They have recently reached out to their community and formed an Interim Board of Directors.

I am happy to jump in with the other 40-odd very notable members at this time and I am totally humbled to be in such company. (You should see the tracks of email convos popping back and forth between this fine group of social media-ites: phew. All great stuff.)

This online over-the-internet-waves-and-on-the-ground Board will be in existence for the coming months – perhaps 6 or so – until an actual *proper* board of 12 is officially elected in some sort of democratic way down the road.

Until then, please read the official announcement, the release, the news and support this social media mecca endeavor wherever and however you can. Oh, and what the hell is SMC anyways? Well, for starters: community, sharing, conversation, changing the world! – Go forth and find out!

Cheers to CH and KW for kicking this all into high gear, looking forward to great things to come…

I shot 2 segments for the show. The first, Episode 47, aired this week, where I spoke with Leo about social media and non-profit organizations. The other is set to air in early August, with both Warwick and I speaking about ThisCityRocks and video content sharing and revenue and just how it’s done and how lucrative it really can be! *cough*

If you’re in Vancouver and have all kinds of techy-talk you’d like to share with Leo, contact the show and let them know you’re interested. Matt Harris, The Lab’s Producer (and as we discovered before shooting, a fellow Rye High RTA Grad – small world!) is always looking for more people (and advertisers) to have on the show.

Warwick and I took a bunch of pics that day as well – check ‘em out.

It took me a day to really get over the effect of K’naan; the energy and peace that spilled all over me from a mere 20 minute conversation with this man – he is a special human and his essence reeks of a positive peace that I have not experienced too often in my short life.

ThisCityRocks features K’naan in Episode 11 from the Telus Ski and Snowboard Festival in Whistler. Sol Guy from Direct Current Media was kind enough to grant us some time for an interview. And Warwick and I melted from K’naan’s inspiring live show in the village. I took a few snaps of the show as well.

Thank-you to Art Maughan from BoxTop Studios for stepping in to edit this episode. A lot of fun stuff produced in this one. And to Class5 Snowboards for sponsoring the episode.

Enjoy.

nextMEDIA, one of Canada’s premier digital conferences, kicks off today in Banff Alberta, and what better a way to spend a week-end than in the mountains with a whole slew of the industry’s leaders, discussing the future of digital content? That’s why I’m here. Hell, I even brought my mountain dog .

There are some incredible people descending upon Banff this week-end (not to mention, nextMEDIA is strategically placed immediately prior to the Banff World TV Festival, which begins on Sunday), so you not only get one stellar crowd, but a healthy and somewhat necessary blend of audience and participants – something of a cross-pollination… from the internet to television, or is that the other way around?

Have a peek at the speakers in the schedule and watch for some updates, summaries and opinions from the week-end here, Krug’s outlet, Kate Trgovac, and maybe check what’s already been said in the media on the media page. And, well, this next part goes without saying: they do in fact have a Facebook page.

From everything I’ve heard, if you’re into geekery and the future of digital media, you’ll be signing up for this conference for next year by Monday.
